Learning Greek with Hasan Tuna
Describe the problem that you want to address. How does this problem effect people in their daily lives?

Cyprus is a divided country. Division is not only phsically, but also culturally, daily life dimension etc. Two communities have differnces but also many similarities, maybe most of the people are not aware of.

Education and media are two most important field to show people either their differences or similarities. Common life can start with understanding the 'other' in conflict countries.

In Cyprus there are two main languages. Even both communities have their different dialects, basicly we speak Greek and Turkish in the island.

Before division, in the mixed villages and towns many Greek Cypriots used to learn Turkish and many Turkish Cypriots learn Greek as well. But then, number of bi-langual persons decrease.

After 2003, openening some of the borders to pass, both people started to face more with the 'other' language. In daily life, it is very useful for all Cypriots.

Also speaking/understanding the 'other' language in Cyprus, peace culture will grow up. Because people will start to understand the 'other's life, culture and daily agenda easer.

Describe your proposed solution – How does your approach build on or add to more traditional ways of dealing with problem?

As Kanal SİM TV, we are starting a new programme to help Turkish Cypriots to learn Greek language by television. The programme will be started in the beginning of May 2014 and hopefuly wil be continously. Not fixed yet, but the 'Greek Language' programme will be broadcasted often on Kanal SİM TV to reach adiences widely. 3 new lessons will be out every week and lessons will be repeated in different times. The lessons (programmes) will be given by a  teacher who graduated Greek Literature. Animations, dramatic shows and some other tecnics will be helping to the programme. The teacher will teach both, linguistic and also practical words and sentences at the same time. After teacher's speaking letters, words and sentences will be seen on the screen by green box techinc. Also sometimes subject will be dramatized as a clip in the programme. For example, when the teacher give a course about shopping, two individuals will act as shopping to pack the subject for audiences.

Which technologies are you planning to use and why? Please make reference to other similar uses of your proposed technology.

The target audiences are all Turkish speaking individuals who may watch Kanal SİM TV in Cyprus, in Turkey or in the EU by satellite or even in another part of the world by internet and smart phone/tablet applications. (Just try Kanal SİM to find out the application). The project will be on the screen by the May and some of the NGO's which have similar vision, already promised to support to make it more visible. What the project aim is, not only teaching Greek to Turkish-speaking persons, but also giving to the communities a peaceful message too. Speaking the same language brings people closer. The programme will play this role succesfully and help common future in the island.
