Describe the problem that you want to address. How does this problem effect people in their daily lives?

There are various migrating birds visiting Famagusta Lake. Being generous in species diversity in terms of flora and fauna, there are more than two hundred species occurring as regular passage migrants.  Most of them stop by at Famagusta Lake due to the geographical advantages of the flora. Despite that, the surrounding areas are poor, full of debris and sickly useless. It is not only unpleasant in terms of environmental aesthetics, but also unhealthy for both migrating birds and the people of Famagusta. By WF project, the lake will be converted to the Famagusta Ornitological Park, which will create an environmental platform for both habitants and the migrating birds. There will be coin operated binoculars for birdwatching, walking paths, and silent reading areas at the park. Moreover, there will be information boards at various locations of the park providing information about wildlife of Famagusta, especially about migrating birds. The primary users of the services are expected to be all nature enthusiasts living in or visiting Famagusta.

Describe your proposed solution – How does your approach build on or add to more traditional ways of dealing with problem?

Until now, there has been limited consciousness of the need of increasing nature awareness in Famagusta region. People should be more conscious of the environment they live in. There is no source or database for flora and fauna, accessible by public. Wildlife Famagusta will be the first platform to increase nature awareness and reinforce the wildlife activity in the area. In Famagusta Ornitological Park, there will be guided tours, and various didactive activities for kids. It will not only reinforce nature tourism, but also create job opportunities in Famagusta region for the unemployed people.

Which technologies are you planning to use and why? Please make reference to other similar uses of your proposed technology.

Wildlife Famagusta is planned to be a smartphone application which will allow users to share their photos of the animal species they see around which are unknown to them. It will be a social platform that users could share their knowledge in order to identify species, via commenting on the photos shared by other users. By doing this, a database for wildlife will be built via public interaction so WF will not only be beneficial environmentally but also socially. There will be an entrance fee at the park for conservation project but it will be free for Wildlife Famagusta users hence nature enthusiasts will enjoy experiencing the wildlife.
